CICC Magnet Development at the NHMFL

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is presently developing two resistive-superconducting hybrid magnets. One will be installed at the NHMFL as part of our dc magnet facility and will provide 36 T in a 40 mm room-temperature bore using 13 MW of dc power with uniformity of 1 ppm over a 10 mm DSV. Another will be installed at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin and will provide 25 T using 4 MW of dc power and be used for neutron scattering experiments. While the field-strengths of these magnets do not rival the NHMFL's 45 T hybrid, each will provide unique capability worldwide. The NHMFL magnet will provide a unique combination of high field with high-homogeneity while the HZB magnet will be the highest field neutron scattering magnet worldwide and will be the first hybrid magnet with either a horizontal bore or a converging-diverging conical bore to facilitate neutron scattering experiments. Recently the NHMFL has started considering the possibilities of developing dc magnets in the 50-60 T range. Status of the NHMFL and HZB magnet projects is presented along with preliminary conceptual designs of 50-60 T hybrids.
